Career Changer: Lauren Midgley, Communications Officer at HelpAge International

We speak to Lauren Midgley, Communications Officer at HelpAge International, to find out what made her make the move from Finance to working in the Charity sector and her top tips for achieving success.

Scroll

What are the 3 main skills needed to do your job?

Communication, creativity and collaboration. I work with people across the world to raise awareness about the global issues affecting older people and to lobby for change. This means I have to be an effective storyteller, think creatively and work and share ideas with a variety of people to ensure we make an impact.

What motivated you to make the change?

After University, I went into finance, only because it seemed like an obvious choice in Jersey. After a year and a half it became clear that I was not enjoying the work and I wanted to get out before I got too comfortable. The charity sector aligned with my interests, and while on an internship I discovered my passion for writing and photography. Communications just seemed like the right fit!

Top tips for a career in this area?

There are lots of different routes into charity communications and it doesn't have to require a communications degree. Develop your skills and get contacts by volunteering for charities or within a communications role in your spare time. Demonstrate you can write by starting your own blog, website or by just learning more about the sector and the subjects that interest you.

Thinking of changing your career direction?
