We speak to our very own Lynne Haws to find out what made her make the move from accountancy to Head of Careers and Student Finance at Skills Jersey, and her top tips for achieving success.
What are the 3 main skills needed to do your job?
What motivated you to make the change?
Having worked as an accountant for over 20 years I realised that the parts of the job that I loved were the people elements, be that training, management or assisting people with their work finance in a much deeper way. With this in mind I decided to seek out as many of these opportunities as I could within my accounting role. I volunteered to be interviewed and to interview, I did lots of reading around coaching/careers and sought to understand the policy areas around the non-finance elements of the areas I was financially responsible for. Eventually I was offered the most fantastic opportunity to apply to take over as Head of Careers and Student Finance when the previous head retired. This was never in my life plan but happened through a genuine interest in the area and seeking out all relevant opportunities to increase my knowledge. I can genuinely say that it was the best move I have ever made and do believe that age should not be a barrier to doing what you love in work.
