Career Changer: Ross Minkley, Barber at KSG Barbershop

We speak to Ross Minkley, Barber at KSG Barbershop, to find out what made him make the move from Finance to a rewarding career as a Barber and his top tips for achieving success.

Scroll

What are the 3 main skills needed to do your job?

Excellent customer service, the ability to be an effective communicator and listener and be adaptable, you never know who is going to come through the door!

What motivated me to make the change?

Prior to being a barber I was working at JT Global in their finance department, but felt that I had some kind of artistic side concealed and was keen to incorporate that into a profession. When I trained in 2014 I was aware of the potential for growth in the barbering industry and wanted to be a part of that. It’s a creative trade which allows me to meet people from all walks of life, and I take great satisfaction in giving clients the confidence that a new haircut can give them. It’s a very rewarding job and no day is the same.

Top tips for a career in this area?

Have a good work ethic and be dependable. Barbers spend most of our time on our feet so there is a certain physical element involved too. Be personable - you can meet some interesting characters and make good friends too! Keep learning and be on trend - like any job, there are always ways to improve. Be open to change and willing to try new techniques.
