Career Changer: Tim De Gruchy, Managing Director at 365Tickets

We speak to Tim De Gruchy, Managing Director at, to find out what made him make the move from teacher to managing director for a leading online ticketing company and his top tips for achieving success.

What are the 3 main skills needed to do your job?

  • Be receptive to the expertise, knowledge and skills of others.
  • Focus and communicate the priorities: short, medium and long term (unfortunately they will differ)
  • Love what you do - not sure that's a skill but it's reflected in every aspect.

What motivated you to make the change?

Well, I've had a number of roles and have enjoyed them all. Teaching at Secondary school was an incredible education in itself, I was fortunate to have some incredible mentors during my PGCE and NQT years. After 4+ years, an opportunity came up to live in New Zealand and without commitments at the time, my wife I willingly accepted.

After 2 years we returned to Jersey and I took a role with Albert Bartlett's as an Operations Manager for the summer season. Through a friend, I heard about a Practice Manager position at New Era Veterinary Hospital and was offered the role. This was a fantastic opportunity at 34 years old to be supporting a mature and highly regarded Veterinary Hospital and 2 satellite sites, Leodis and Archway. After 5 years in the role, I made the decision to start something new and accepted a position at 365Tickets.

This position offered very different opportunities, namely a position to grow an international business from a Jersey office, to immerse myself with the very latest technology, fully integrated accounting system via Xero, multiple e-commerce domains, digital marketing and to be involved in arguably, the most entertaining industry on the planet - the Attraction and Activities industry. I consider myself very fortunate to be surrounded by a talented and incredibly enthusiastic team.

Top tips for a career in this area?

Well, I think it's probably applicable to all careers but simplistically - continue to learn, add value wherever possible and most importantly, for me, love what you do.
