Eco Careers: Sheena Brockie, Environmental and Sustainability Consultant

We speak to Sheena Brockie to find out about her role and advice on how you can learn more about environmental careers.

What are the main skills needed to do your job?

An imbedded passion for protecting the environment is the cornerstone of what I do. I ensure that I research facts independently when I am writing about environmental and sustainability matters, either by visiting sites and talking with the individuals there, or reading relevant scientific research or industry guidance. I am currently studying to be an ISO 14001 Lead auditor and completing the IEMA Foundation in Environmental Management Systems. When working on the environmental impacts of a business, it helps to have a methodical approach and attention to detail.

What motivated you to work in this field?

Growing up I lived in the middle of a 1000 acre country park, which instilled in me a love for nature - all the flora and fauna which was abundant there. Over the years I could see the effects that human actions were having on the natural environment around me as I moved from Scotland, to Europe and then settled in Jersey, and this slowly grew over the years to become an absolute passion for protecting it. Now, as truly global citizens, we recognise that our actions here can impact people and the natural environment the whole globe over.

What advice would you give to someone who is keen to learn more about environmental careers?

Research, and make the link to something that you are personally interested in. The 'Environment' is a broad umbrella under which sits many areas of expertise - whether this is in the natural environment, biodiversity, marine biology, regenerative agriculture, renewable energy, research and development, and so the list grows.
