National Work Experience Week: Tom McAviney, Axis Mason

We speak to Tom McAviney to find out why Axis Mason support trident and what advice he would give a young person who is about to start a work experience placement.

Scroll

Why does your company support Trident?

We are enthusiastic about our careers and a lot of us didn’t realise the options available to us at such an early age. We want to show people the range of careers available within our company and in Jersey in general. This includes Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape design. We enjoy showing the range of daily tasks associated with each of these professions. We can offer guidance for students starting the application process and offer reviews of CVs and Portfolios.

What transferable skills do you think young people gain from their work experience with you?

The ability to complete piece of design work that is presentable to a client, teacher, classmates etc. The students undertake a design project which incorporates a wide range of tasks and activities within the studio and outside. This is all recorded and pulled together into a presentation as you would for any design project in all types of design professions.

What advice would you give a young person who is about to start a work experience placement?

You don’t need any pre-existing skills so take the opportunity to learn some new skills. It is important to think of yourself as an adult in a room full of colleagues so try and engage with people whenever you can and ask people for help or just ask them what they are doing that day.

If a student is looking for further work experience with yourself (after Trident) are there opportunities and if so, how can they go about applying?

Yes, They can just email and ask for a further holiday placement. We have a Student pathway which gives opportunities from school leaving age all the way to fully qualifying in their chosen field. Support is available financially with fees as well as work placements throughout the education period.

If you are a student with questions about your work experience, or an employer wanting to discuss further about offering work experience, contact the Trident team via email trident@gov.je or call +44 (0) 1534 449440.
