Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) is the Island's official, publicly-funded aid and development agency. JOA's mission is to translate the generosity, skills and compassion of the people of Jersey into effective assistance for the world's most vulnerable people.
JOA’s experienced staff are responsible for ensuring that the Island’s contribution to overseas aid is both targeted and effective. This is achieved through rigorous project selection, monitoring and oversight, which takes place in JOA’s office, here in Jersey, and through field trips to projects overseas.
International development and humanitarian organisations – such as UNICEF, UNHCR, the British Red Cross and Comic Relief – are responsible for implementing the selected projects, which range from the supply of clean water in Yemen in the midst of a cholera outbreak, to improving the health and income of communities in Rwanda by cross-breeding Jersey cows with indigenous breeds.
In addition, JOA supports individuals interested in a career in international development through internship and bursary programmes which enable Jersey residents to gain on-the-ground experience.
